Ground Zero

During our trip to NYC for DMB, we spent one morning walking around the area near Ground Zero.  We were not able to go in to see the new Memorial, but from the street and surrounding buildings, there are areas where you can see the Memorial.  In one of the buildings was a man giving a tour, telling his story of where he was on 9/11.  There wasn't a single dry eye with him.

As it was such a beautiful sun-filled day, I wanted to share the images that I was able to capture.

Food and Fall in The Bronx

A perfectly gorgeous beginning of fall weekend.  The air was crisp, leaves were rustling, and fire wood was split for the first fire of the season.  Oh how I love the smell of a wood-burning fireplace.  That smell is what fall is to me. 

Our visit through the Bronx included a few stops at our friend's favorite Italian eateries... Pizza and Pastries!  Notice we couldn't even wait until after the picture to take a bite of our slices.

 

Dave Matthews Band Food & Drink

Every time we go to a concert, we always find a favorite food or drink...  Usually we try to find something local or something that we haven't had before.  In some ways these food items become a souvenir from the concert that anytime we have again, reminds us of it. 

Some examples... during Labor Day weekend 2010, when we went to see DMB at the Gorge, it was Fat Tire and Molson Canadian.  During DMB at Alpine Valley in July 2009 it was Blackberry Witbier and Jimmy John's sandwiches. 

So this past weekend in NYC it was Sixpoint Craft Ales "The Crisp" and hand-cut potato chips.
Hailing from Brooklyn, The Crisp, as the name suggests, is a light, refreshing beer - like a light IPA with a twist of lemon.  And the potato chips were spiral cut on-site, then fried to the perfect crispy texture and seasoned with a mixture of rough salt, pepper, oregano, garlic and parmesan.  If you aren't salivating yet, wait until you see the picture below.

The food options at this festival were unlike anything I have ever seen at a concert.  They were serving up everything from your traditional burger and fries to pulled pork sandwiches to pad thai (which was really good!).  Check out the spread below:

The Festival also set up a Craft Beer Garden that served up Sierra Nevada, Magic Hat, Abita, and the most interesting and new to us - Sixpoint Craft Ales. 

Another tasty snack that was new to me was an Arepa, a Sweet Corn Cake filled with Mozzarella.  It was crispy on the edges with kernels of corn and filled with gooey stringy mozzarella cheese.

Fall Adventures

I can't believe that it is fall!  I absolutely love fall... I have such fond memories of walking down the driveway of my childhood house, stepping on crunchy leaves, and breathing in the crisp air that smelled of a fresh wood-burning fireplace.

Also, I'm not going to lie, I am totally looking forward to the relief from this summer's DC heat.  I just hope that fall lasts long enough to enjoy it before it changes to winter here.  So, in an effort to plan for the fall, here are some of our autumn adventures.

- Football (2 Notre Dame games and 1 GVSU game this year!)
- Weekend in Chicago
- Hiking in Virginia
- Recreating some favorite recipes from my grandmother
- Putting together some cute fall decor for our apartment (perhaps something like the beautiful W-S wreath below?)

And here are some fall favorites we are looking forward to:
- Apple Cider
- Pumpkin Everything... Beer, Ice Cream (we had the most amazing pumpkin ice cream with some Boston friends last fall... I'll have to find out what that was.  Does anyone in the Salem, MA area know the name of the fantastic pumpkin ice cream?), and even just regular old pumpkins!
- The view of DC with the leaves changing color

DMB Caravan at Randall's Island

Thanks to Miss IRENE, the DMB Caravan was rescheduled from the end of August on Governor's Island to this past weekend on Randall's Island.   Randall's Island is a NYC public park located in the East River between East Harlem, the South Bronx and Astoria, Queens.  It includes beautiful green-space, bicycle and running trails, soccer fields, a tennis center, among other facilities.  Randall's Island doesn't quite have the view of Manhattan as Governor's Island, but it was a beautiful setting for the festival.

My interest in blogs is entirely, 100-percent the result of our wedding.  I found so many blogs with beautiful weddings, gorgeous details, and fantastically creative DIY ideas and I literally couldn’t get enough.  I found blogs that served as wedding websites which I soon realized is a fantastic idea and is what we used for our wedding website. 

Now that the wedding is over and the glow from the gorgeous Aruban sun has faded, we have decided to create this space to share the things we love including, as the title suggests...
